Crafting Dream Machines: How to Design Planes in Chasing Stars Online #2
-
Did you know that it only takes a lot of combinations of 26 letters to create the weekly Chasing Stars Online Development Newsletter? In this post I’m going to tell you about what needs to be done for creating 3D models of aircrafts.
Hi @everyone! Last week we posted an article about the Chasing Stars Online aircraft creation process and we continue this topic today. Let me remind you that at that time we stopped at creating a 3D sketch.
So, when the agony of choice is over, and the 3D sketch is approved, we proceed to texturing. At this stage, the surfaces of the model are given the necessary properties in order to make it more realistic. In this case, the details are displayed not on the 2D concept, but directly on the 3D model itself. (edited)
This approach allows you to evaluate the result immediately in the game engine and test the model in "combat" conditions. This makes it much easier for the 3D artist to work with the final model.
After completing the 3D sketch, we move on to high-poly modeling. At this stage, the task of the 3D artist is to detail the sketch, to make it “neat”. When the basic shapes are drawn on the “canvas,” all that remains is to “breathe life” into this sketch and add a few touches.
In the screenshot below, you can see a visual comparison of two models: a sketch from above and a high-poly model from below. Can you see the differences?
Then we move on to low-poly modeling, that is, simplifying the model. At this stage, our 3D artists, cutting off all unnecessary, transform the aircraft, giving it the look that was originally conceived. This model can be considered almost finished.
The last step is to apply the necessary textures and materials. Now (or rather, after checking and correcting the shortcomings, if any), we can confidently say that the model is ready for publication and import into the game engine, where you can enjoy flying on a completely finished warship.
Now you know a little more about the process of creating 3D models of Chasing Stars Online aircrafts. How do you like this series of posts? As usual, I am waiting for your comments
