From Bottle Opener to Airplane: Unveiling the Design Process

Hello @everyone! Have you ever thought about how are created? Yes, we already talked about this in one of our past publications. And today, let's find out what kind of metamorphosis occurs from the initial concepts, to finished models, using the example of airplanes.
The development of a layout begins with its silhouette, you can think for a long time and sit in search of references, for a long time or, for example, just look around you. Okay, you can even go to the kitchen for a cup of coffee while searching. By the way, there we found the main inspiration in the form of a bottle opener.Great, we can already work with this! But now we need to create the first silhouettes based on it, and in general this is not a problem. The result of simple sketches is the birth of three types of aircraft at once.
It looks good, but as you can understand, there are still not enough details, for this let's add motors on the rear wing. When placing additional elements, you should immediately take into account that the player will see the plane from behind most of the time.
Taking into consideration this fact, we "polish" the concept. Now these are only rough sketches that need to be detailed after all. Remove something, add something and you're done:
Well, isn't it good? Handsome, elegant, balanced. But this is not the time for praise, we still haven't tested it, so we insert the concept into the game engine to make sure the position of the aircraft relative to the camera and other nuances. Are right primarily, this is necessary so that such a picture does not show up.
I think you will agree that the camera in the presented screenshot is not where it is needed, so the concept looks boring. It is because of this that gameplay testing is required at such an early stage of model creation. So let's change it a little, create something more interesting and unique by tearing off the rear flat wing, for example.
In the process of correcting, we are making more changes to give the concept a personality. In addition, while we were considering various types of wings, we flipped them quite a bit, only 180 degrees 🙂 It looks better, but now the balance has shifted a lot towards the nose of the plane, so let's add details to the tail. It turned out to be something more balanced, didn't it? It remains to check all our developments on the remaining concepts. Of course, these are far from final versions, but they already look different, of course, in comparison with the original versions.
It remains only to complete all the resulting models of the sketches: for this we will adjust the proportions, and add details. As a result, we get a completely different result compared to the original concept.

It would seem that the work is over, it's time to send the concepts to 3D artists, but we still have the original concept, which we really don't want to lose and throw away.
So let's get back to it, as far as you remember, its wing in the game engine didn't look very good to say the least. Therefore, let's tear it off and remove unnecessary details. Let's add more polygons to the rest of the wireframe to make the plane look holistic and interesting.The result of our work is the birth of three airplanes dissimilar to each other. But it all started with our trip for a cup of coffee and bottle opener. And this is just the beginning of a long and painstaking work on the 3D model, which we have already told you about earlier.
